Melissa Leaf Extract comes from the herb Melissa Officinalis. A member of the mint family that is grown primarily in the Mediterranenan region and in Europe. It is used in hair and skin care formulations primarily for its cleansing properties.
In studies unrelated to skin care, the radical scavenging properties of Melissa Leaf were investigated in cells and in cell free systems, where this plant was shown to be a good free radical scavenger. In vitro data suggest that lemon balm may contain high concentrations of antioxidants.
Topical use of this herb is not associated with any known side effects, although allergic reactions are possible as with any ingredient. Safety concerns primarily address ingestion. When taken orally, Melissa has been linked to reduced alertness and impaired mental function.
